Four-leggedness, also known as tetrapody, refers to the condition of having four limbs or legs. This anatomical trait is widely observed across various animal groups, including mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The evolutionary origin of tetrapody dates back to ancient fish-like vertebrates that transitioned from aquatic to terrestrial environments during the Devonian period, approximately 360 million years ago. This adaptation allowed early tetrapods to exploit new ecological niches on land.

The four limbs in tetrapods typically serve multiple functions, such as locomotion, manipulation of objects, and support. In mammals, for example, the arrangement of limbs—two front and two hind—enables efficient movement, balance, and dexterity. The structure of these limbs varies significantly among species, reflecting diverse evolutionary pressures. For instance, carnivorous mammals like cheetahs possess elongated limbs optimized for speed, while herbivores such as elephants have sturdier, more robust limbs suited for carrying heavy weight.

Birds, though often associated with two legs, are technically tetrapods as embryos, though they retain only two functional legs as adults. Reptiles and amphibians also exhibit four-legged forms, though some species, like snakes, have lost this trait entirely through evolutionary processes. In humans and other primates, the loss of functional hind limbs (retention of vestigial pelvic bones) is a notable deviation from the tetrapod pattern, reflecting a shift toward bipedalism.

Four-leggedness remains a dominant feature in many terrestrial vertebrates, illustrating its adaptive advantages in diverse environments. The study of tetrapody provides insights into evolutionary biology, biomechanics, and the broader patterns of animal diversification.
