Fototrichografie

Fototrichografie, also known as phototrichography, is a non-invasive imaging method used in trichology to quantify hair growth, density and dynamics in a defined scalp area. The technique relies on standardized serial photography and image analysis to provide objective measurements that can be tracked over time. In clinical protocols, a small scalp region is shaved or depilated at baseline, and subsequent photographs are taken after a fixed interval to capture new growth.

During analysis, software or manual counting determines hair density (hairs per square centimeter), average hair diameter, and the rate of hair shaft elongation. Some protocols additionally classify hairs according to growth phase, yielding an estimate of the proportion in anagen versus telogen. In certain approaches, a contrasting dye or pigment is applied to improve hair–follicle visualization.

Fototrichography is used to evaluate hair loss disorders such as androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium, and to monitor responses to treatments (for example topical minoxidil, oral antiandrogens, or regenerative therapies) in both clinical practice and research settings. The method provides repeatable, quantitative data that complement clinical examination and patient-reported symptoms.

Limitations include sensitivity to scalp area selection, hair color and cosmetic styling, and the need for meticulous standardization of lighting and positioning. The technique assesses a small scalp region and may not reflect global hair status, and it requires specialized software and trained personnel.
