Fotostudies

Fotostudies, also known as photography studies, is an interdisciplinary field that analyzes the production, representation, reception, and social impact of photographs and photographic practices. Drawing on art history, media studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, and archival science, fotostudies treats photographs as cultural artifacts that shape knowledge, memory, and identity.

Scholars examine the historical development of photographic technologies and genres (portrait, documentary, fashion), as well as the institutions that house and circulate images—studios, galleries, archives, and online platforms. The field also investigates how photographs mediate everyday life, publicity, journalism, and visual culture in different societies.

Theoretical perspectives emphasize the constructed nature of images and the ways viewers interpret them, as well as relationships among photography, power, gender, race, and memory. Influential ideas come from thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, John Berger, and Susan Sontag.
