Fotolabila

Fotolabila is a genus of crawlies that comprise a range of species popularly referred to as constructor ants. These creatures are a key part of ecosystems on tropical islands in the Pacific. Constructor ants build networks of paths and extensive underground colonies, often featuring entrance and exit points, as well as compost piles for storing food.

These complex networks are built from a combination of soil and saliva, which the ants mix to create a structural paste. The use of saliva in the construction process allows the ants to control the mixture's consistency and also provides a weak bond that enables them to rework their nesting materials.

Ants within the fotolabila genus are known for their agricultural ability and role as major decomposers. They are seen collecting sources of protein and carbohydrates from the environment, and storing them in underground caches. Fotolabila colonies, through their large-scale operations, contribute to the ecosystem's nutrient cycle.

The fotolabila's structures, considered among the most complex for any insect, can be as extensive as 40 square meters. Research into their nesting patterns has led to comparisons with various human-made infrastructure and comparable maintenance efforts in immense urban environments. The study of these structures and social behaviors may also provide insights into human societal evolution and antigen evolution.
