Fossillagerstätten
Fossillagerstätten are fossil deposits notable for either an unusually high concentration of specimens or exceptional preservation of soft tissues, delicate structures, or complete organisms. The German term Lagerstätte (literally "storage place") is used in paleontology to distinguish these sites from ordinary fossil-bearing strata. Two broad categories are recognized: Konzentrat-Lagerstätten, which contain dense accumulations of fragmented or disarticulated remains, and Konservat-Lagerstätten, which preserve anatomical detail rarely retained in the rock record.
Formation of fossil lagerstätten typically requires a combination of rapid burial, low oxygen conditions that slow
Fossillagerstätten are scientifically valuable because they illuminate anatomy, ecology, and evolutionary transitions that cannot be inferred
Because of their rarity and scientific importance, lagerstätten are often subject to legal protection and ethical
