Fosfoitukset refers to the process of phosphorylation, a fundamental biochemical reaction involving the addition of a phosphate group to a molecule. This process is crucial for a vast array of biological functions within living organisms. In most cases, the phosphate group is transferred from adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the cell's primary energy currency, to a substrate molecule. This transfer is typically facilitated by enzymes known as kinases.

Phosphorylation can occur on various types of molecules, including proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. When a phosphate group is added to a protein, it can alter the protein's conformation, activity, or localization, acting as a molecular switch to control cellular processes. This is a key mechanism in signal transduction pathways, where a cascade of phosphorylation events relays information throughout the cell.

In carbohydrates, phosphorylation often precedes their breakdown for energy or their storage. For instance, glucose phosphorylation is the first step in glycolysis. The addition of a phosphate group can also increase the water solubility of a molecule, aiding in its transport or excretion. Conversely, the removal of a phosphate group, a process called dephosphorylation, is equally important and is catalyzed by enzymes called phosphatases, which reverse the effects of kinases and are essential for regulating cellular activity.
