Formulatsioon

Formulatsioon is a term used in Estonian to describe the process and result of formulating something. In science and engineering, it most often refers to formulation: the deliberate combination of ingredients to create a product with desired properties. In pharmacology and chemistry, formulation means selecting active ingredient(s), excipients, solvents, pH adjusters, preservatives, and packaging to produce a dosage form suitable for administration and stable under storage. Common dosage forms include tablets, capsules, solutions, suspensions, emulsions, gels, creams, and ointments. The formulation process covers ingredient compatibility, stability testing, release profile, palatability, manufacturing scalability, regulatory compliance, and quality control.

In cosmetics and consumer products, formulation focuses on texture, appearance, fragrance, skin feel, efficacy, and safety, while meeting regulatory labeling and allergen requirements. In linguistics or writing, formulation denotes the way a concept, argument, or proposal is expressed, including wording, structure, and tone.

Formulation development is iterative, often requiring compatibility testing, stability studies, and performance testing, with documentation such as a formulation dossier, specification sheets, and standard operating procedures. Regulatory considerations include safety data, labeling, permissible ingredients, and good manufacturing practices. The term is widely used across industries to denote both the blueprint (the recipe) and the final product as produced.
