Formation water is the saline liquid that occupies the pore spaces of subsurface rock formations. It is also called formation brine or reservoir water. The fluid is generated by the dissolution of minerals in the host rock, by the generation of hydrocarbons, and by the infiltration of meteoric water during sedimentation. Most formation waters are highly saline, with salinity ranging from a few hundred to several thousand parts per million of total dissolved solids. In marine sedimentary basins salinity typically reflects the composition of seawater at the time of deposition, whereas continental basins often contain brines with distinctive geochemical signatures.

The composition of formation water is used as a key parameter in petrophysical and geochemical studies. By analysing major ions (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42-, etc.) and isotopic ratios, geoscientists can infer the origin of the brine, the diagenetic history of the formation, and fluid migration pathways. In petroleum engineering, formation water composition informs reservoir simulation, drilling fluid design, and production optimization. For example, high concentrations of divalent cations can lead to scale formation, whereas chloride-dominated brines may be corrosive to wellbore material.

Formation waters are also a resource in the mining and mineral extraction industries. Salt and other valuable minerals can be recovered from hypersaline brines in some carbonate reservoirs. In addition, some industry processes use injection of formation water for enhanced oil recovery or to support geothermal energy extraction.

Environmental and regulatory considerations are important when dealing with formation water. Production of formation water is monitored for pollutant content before discharge or reinjection, particularly if it contains hydrocarbons, organic residues, or heavy metals. Many jurisdictions require that produced brine be treated or handled in compliance with water quality standards.
