Fordøjelsesanlæg, also known as a septic system, is a self-contained, underground wastewater treatment system commonly used in areas where connection to a municipal sewer system is not available. It is designed to collect, treat, and dispose of wastewater from households, including toilets, showers, sinks, and washing machines.

The system typically consists of a septic tank and a drainfield. The septic tank is a watertight container, usually made of concrete or fiberglass, where wastewater is held for biological treatment. Heavy solids settle to the bottom, forming sludge, while lighter solids, such as fats and greases, float to the top as scum. The liquid in between, known as effluent, is partially treated and then released into the drainfield.

The drainfield is a shallow trench or network of perforated pipes filled with gravel, where the effluent is filtered through the soil. The soil acts as a natural filter, further treating the wastewater before it infiltrates into the groundwater. The treated wastewater is then absorbed by the soil, replenishing groundwater resources.

Regular maintenance is crucial for the proper functioning of a septic system. This includes pumping the septic tank every three to five years to remove sludge and scum, and inspecting the drainfield for signs of failure, such as wet spots or poor absorption rates. Failure to maintain a septic system can lead to backups, foul odors, and potential health risks.

It is essential to note that the design and capacity of a septic system depend on various factors, including the size of the household, the amount of wastewater generated, and the soil conditions. Professional installation and periodic inspections by a certified septic system inspector are recommended to ensure the system operates efficiently and effectively.
