Fordonsmärkningssystem, also known as vehicle marking systems, refers to the various methods used to identify and track vehicles. These systems are crucial for a wide range of applications, including law enforcement, fleet management, customs, and anti-theft measures. The most common form of vehicle marking is the license plate, a unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to each registered vehicle by a governmental authority. These plates are designed to be durable and visible, often incorporating security features to prevent counterfeiting.

Beyond license plates, other vehicle marking systems include VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) or chassinummer. This is a unique 17-character code that identifies a specific vehicle and is permanently affixed to the vehicle's chassis. The VIN provides a comprehensive history of the vehicle, including its manufacturer, model, year of manufacture, and production sequence. RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) tags can be embedded in windshields or other parts of the vehicle, allowing for rapid automated identification at toll booths, access gates, or security checkpoints. GPS tracking systems, while primarily for location services, also contribute to a vehicle's unique identification and management within a fleet.
