Folyósításának is a Hungarian term that translates to "liquefaction" in English. This refers to a process where a solid substance becomes a liquid. In a geological context, soil liquefaction is a phenomenon that occurs when saturated or partially saturated soil loses its strength and stiffness due to earthquake shaking or other rapid loading. This can cause the soil to behave like a liquid.

This phenomenon is particularly concerning in areas prone to seismic activity. When soil liquefies, it can no longer support the weight of structures built upon it. This can lead to significant damage, including the settling or tilting of buildings, as well as the failure of foundations. Liquefaction can also cause lateral spreading of the ground, where large blocks of soil move horizontally.

The susceptibility of soil to liquefaction depends on several factors, including the soil type (typically sands and silts are more prone), its density, the degree of saturation, and the intensity and duration of the ground shaking. Understanding and assessing liquefaction potential is a critical aspect of seismic hazard analysis and geotechnical engineering for construction in earthquake-prone regions.
