Fokaliseringsgrad

Fokaliseringsgrad refers to the degree to which a narrative filters events and perceptions through the consciousness of a specific character. It is a concept in narratology that describes how much subjective experience the reader is privy to. A high fokaliseringsgrad means the reader experiences the story almost entirely through the eyes and mind of one character, having access to their thoughts, feelings, and interpretations. Conversely, a low fokaliseringsgrad indicates a more objective or omniscient perspective, where the narrator presents events and information without being tied to a single character's viewpoint.

This concept is closely related to focalization, which identifies the character whose perspective is being used. Fokaliseringsgrad, however, quantifies the intensity of that perspective. For example, a story told from the first-person perspective of a character might have a very high fokaliseringsgrad, as the reader only knows what that character knows and feels. An omniscient narrator, on the other hand, typically exhibits a very low fokaliseringsgrad, as it can access the thoughts and feelings of multiple characters or provide information beyond any single character's awareness. The degree of fokaliseringsgrad can shift within a narrative, allowing for variations in reader immersion and the revelation of information. Authors manipulate fokaliseringsgrad to control suspense, develop characters, and shape the reader's understanding of the unfolding events.
