Flóðahætta
Flóðahætta refers to the risk of flooding in Iceland. Due to the country's unique geography, characterized by glaciers, volcanoes, and rivers, Iceland is susceptible to various types of floods. Glacial floods, known as jökulhlaups, are a significant concern. These events occur when volcanic activity beneath a glacier causes ice to melt rapidly, leading to a sudden and powerful release of water, ice, and debris. Jökulhlaups can cause extensive damage to infrastructure, roads, and the surrounding landscape.
Another type of flood risk comes from rivers, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall or rapid snowmelt.
