Flussmengen

Flussmengen is a German-language term used to denote quantities that measure the flow of a quantity through a boundary per unit time. It is a generic concept employed in disciplines such as hydrology, physics, and engineering. In practice, Flussmengen appear as discharge rates or flux values, depending on the field, and are fundamental to describing transport processes and conservation laws.

In hydrology and fluid mechanics, the common Flussmenge is the volumetric discharge Q, defined as Q = dV/dt, the volume of water passing a cross-section per unit time. The corresponding mass flow rate is m_dot = dm/dt = ρ Q, with ρ the density. Flussmengen are essential for flood forecasting, water resources management and environmental assessments.

Mathematically, a Flussmenge can be formalized as a flux: for a vector field F, the flux through a surface S is Φ = ∫∫_S F · n dS, where n is the unit normal. For a closed surface, Φ = ∮ F · n dS. This framework generalizes transport of mass, momentum, energy, or other conserved quantities, by choosing F appropriately (for example F = ρ v for mass flux, v the velocity field).

Relation to other concepts: Flussmengen are tied to conservation laws (continuity equations) and to the broader idea of flux in physics, such as electric or magnetic flux through a surface. They provide a unifying language for describing how quantities move through space and across boundaries.
