Flussbad

Flussbad refers to the concept and ongoing project of creating a swimming area within the Spree River in the heart of Berlin, Germany. The initiative aims to reclaim the river as a public recreational space, transforming a section of the Spree into a clean and safe environment for swimming, much like historical urban bathing sites. The project is driven by a non-profit organization called Flussbad Berlin e.V.

The core idea involves a multi-stage process. Initially, the focus is on improving water quality. This includes implementing a natural filtration system that utilizes reed beds and other aquatic plants to purify the river water before it enters the designated swimming zone. The project also involves physical interventions, such as the construction of a barrier to separate the swimming area from the main flow of river traffic and to help settle sediment.
