Flowalarms

Flowalarms are a type of alert system designed to notify users when a specific flow rate or volume of a fluid, gas, or other substance is detected. These systems are crucial in a wide range of industrial, commercial, and even domestic applications where monitoring and controlling the movement of materials is essential for safety, efficiency, or regulatory compliance.

The fundamental principle behind a flowalarm involves a sensor that continuously measures the flow rate. When this measurement crosses a predetermined threshold, either exceeding a maximum limit or dropping below a minimum, the alarm is triggered. This trigger can manifest in various ways, such as an audible siren, a visual flashing light, a notification sent to a control room or a mobile device, or an automated shutdown of the system.

Common applications for flowalarms include water management systems, where they can alert to leaks or insufficient supply; chemical processing, to ensure correct mixing ratios or prevent hazardous over-pressurization; and in the oil and gas industry, for monitoring pipelines and preventing spills. They are also used in HVAC systems to detect fan failures or blockages and in medical devices to monitor fluid delivery. The accuracy and reliability of the flow sensor are paramount to the effectiveness of the flowalarm system. Different types of sensors exist, including turbine, ultrasonic, magnetic, and thermal mass flow meters, each suited for specific fluid types and operational conditions.
