Flatbows

Flatbows are a class of bow whose limbs have a flat, broad cross-section, giving the limbs a rectangular or trapezoidal profile. They are typically long and simple in construction, emphasizing a straight bend along most of the limb. This design contrasts with rounded longbows or curved recurves and is valued for its straightforward manufacturing.

They are often built from a single piece of straight-grained timber (a self bow), though laminated versions exist. The limbs are shaped to be flat in cross-section, with a taper toward the tips. The back and belly surfaces are kept flat to resist twisting, and tillering is used to ensure even bending when drawn. Draw weights vary with length and wood.

Common woods include yew, ash, elm, and osage orange; modern versions may use laminated strips or incorporate fiberglass for added stiffness. Some flatbows are backed with sinew, rawhide, or other materials, though this is less common than with composite bows.

The flatbow form appears in many cultures where straight-grained wood is available and has been used for hunting and early warfare. Its simplicity made it accessible to novice bowyers and traditional archery communities.

Today, flatbows are popular among traditional archers, historical reenactors, and hobbyists. They are valued for ease of construction, reliability, and a close connection to ancient bow-making techniques.
