Flaggan

Flaggan is a fictional coastal town and municipality in the Nordmark region. Located on the southeastern shore of the Gulf of Lysa, the town serves as the administrative center of the Flaggan municipality. The population is about 3,000 residents, and the municipal area covers roughly 12 square kilometers.

Name and etymology: The name Flaggan is thought to derive from the local word for flag, reflecting the town’s historical use of banners at markets and during coastal trade.

History: Established in the 12th century as a fishing village, Flaggan developed into a regional trading site. Fortifications were erected in the 14th century, and the harbor was expanded in the 18th century. The town experienced industrialization in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, followed by modernizing reforms after World War II.

Geography and economy: Flaggan sits on rocky coastline with a natural harbor and nearby cliffs. The economy centers on fishing, shellfish farming, small-scale manufacturing, and tourism, particularly in summer.

Culture and landmarks: The town hosts an annual Flag Days festival featuring parades, banner displays, and maritime exhibitions. Notable landmarks include the Flaggan Fortress ruins, the Old Lighthouse, and St. Mary’s Church. The municipal coat of arms features a stylized flag.

Governance and transportation: Flaggan is governed by a municipal council. It is connected by road to neighboring towns and by a small regional ferry service to nearby islands. Public services include a harbor authority, a library, and a secondary school.
