Flachbilddetektoren, also known as flat panel detectors, are electronic devices used in digital imaging to capture and convert radiation into a digital signal. They have largely replaced traditional film-based radiography in medical imaging, industrial inspection, and security screening due to their advantages in image quality, speed, and dose reduction.

There are two main types of flat panel detectors: direct conversion and indirect conversion. Direct conversion detectors use a photoconductor material, such as amorphous selenium, that directly converts incoming X-rays into electrical charges. These charges are then read out by a thin-film transistor (TFT) array. Indirect conversion detectors use a scintillator material, like cesium iodide or gadolinium oxysulfide, to convert X-rays into visible light. This light is then detected by a photodiode array coupled to a TFT array, which converts the light into an electrical signal.

Flat panel detectors offer several benefits over older technologies. They produce higher resolution images with better contrast, allowing for more detailed visualization of anatomy or structures. Their digital nature enables immediate image display and processing, significantly speeding up the imaging workflow. Furthermore, they can often achieve diagnostic image quality with lower radiation doses, contributing to patient safety. The detectors are typically lightweight and robust, making them suitable for various applications and portable imaging systems. Their widespread adoption has revolutionized digital radiography, offering a more efficient and effective imaging solution.
