Fjäderutvecklingen, also known as feather development, is a complex biological process that occurs during the embryonic and post-hatching stages of birds. This intricate process results in the formation of feathers, which are unique epidermal appendages found exclusively in avian species. The development begins with the formation of dermal papillae, which are small mesenchymal thickenings in the skin. These papillae then induce the overlying epidermis to invaginate, creating a feather follicle.

Within the feather follicle, a specialized structure called the feather germ arises. This germ is composed of rapidly dividing cells that differentiate to form the various components of a feather, including the calamus (quill), rachis, and barbs. As the feather grows, it is initially enclosed in a protective keratinous sheath. Upon maturation, this sheath ruptures, allowing the feather to unfurl and reach its final form.

There are several types of feathers, each with a distinct developmental trajectory and function. Down feathers, for instance, are primarily for insulation and develop with loosely arranged barbs. Contour feathers provide streamlining and color, while flight feathers are crucial for aerial locomotion and possess a rigid, interlocking barb structure. The precise timing and pattern of feather development are controlled by a complex interplay of genetic and hormonal factors, ensuring the formation of a complete and functional plumage for thermoregulation, display, and flight.
