These hydrocarbons can then be refined into synthetic fuels, such as gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel, as well as other valuable chemicals like waxes and lubricants. The process is a key technology in the production of synthetic fuels, often referred to as "synfuels."

The raw materials for the Fischer-Tropsch process, carbon monoxide and hydrogen, are typically derived from a syngas (synthesis gas) stream. Syngas can be produced from a variety of carbonaceous feedstocks, including coal, natural gas, biomass, and waste materials, through processes like gasification or steam reforming. The choice of feedstock significantly impacts the economics and environmental footprint of the Fischer-Tropsch process.

The actual Fischer-Tropsch reaction occurs at elevated temperatures and pressures in the presence of a catalyst, commonly based on iron or cobalt. Historically, the Fischer-Tropsch process gained prominence during periods of oil scarcity, such as in Germany during World War II, where it was used to produce fuel from coal. In modern times, renewed interest stems from the desire to utilize abundant natural gas reserves or to produce cleaner-burning fuels from non-petroleum sources. The Fischer-Tropsch process offers a pathway to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on conventional crude oil.
