Fingerbøyning

Fingerbøyning, or finger bending, is the movement of bending the fingers at their joints. In Norwegian medical language the term describes the flexion of the fingers, primarily at the metacarpophalangeal (MCP), proximal interphalangeal (PIP), and distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints. It is essential for grasping and manipulating objects.

Anatomy: The finger joints, tendons, and muscles allow flexion. The primary flexors are flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus, which run along the palm and attach to the finger bones; flexion is opposed by extensor muscles on the back of the hand.

Clinical relevance: Reduced or painful finger bending can result from injuries or diseases, such as Dupuytren's contracture, trigger finger, tendon injuries, or inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. Assessment uses range of motion measurements, sometimes with a goniometer.

Treatment and rehabilitation: Depending on cause, treatment includes physical therapy, splints, anti-inflammatory medications, or surgery for severe contractures or tendon injuries. Early mobilization improves outcomes.
