Activated carbon is a highly porous material known for its ability to adsorb dissolved organic compounds, chlorine, and odors. Synthetic fibers are versatile and can be manufactured with specific pore sizes and surface characteristics for various applications.

Adsorptive filter materials work by attracting and holding contaminants onto their surface. Activated carbon is a prime example of an adsorptive material. Other adsorptive media include zeolites, which can remove heavy metals and ammonia, and ion-exchange resins, used for water softening and the removal of specific ions.
