Filmmanus

Filmmanus is a term used in the film industry to denote the core written document that guides a film's production. It typically combines screenplay content with scene-by-scene notes, camera directions, and production revisions, serving as a working blueprint for the cast and crew.

Although not a universally standardized term, filmmanus is a blend of "film" and "manuscript." It has appeared in industry discussions and production briefs since at least the late 20th century, though its precise origin is informal and varies by studio or region.

In practice, a filmmanus is often distributed as a working copy that evolves during pre-production and filming. It may include dialogue, blocking instructions, shot lists, insert notes from directors or editors, and references to production design. Digital production environments allow frequent updates and multiple versions.

It is related to but distinct from a screenplay or shooting script. A screenplay focuses on dialogue and narrative structure, while the filmmanus emphasizes production logistics, shot sequencing, and practical information for shooting. In some contexts the terms are used interchangeably or as synonyms for a shooting script.
