Fildelingsprogrammer, or file-sharing programs, are software applications that enable the distribution and sharing of digital files between users over a network, typically without relying on a single central server. They rely on a peer-to-peer model where participants act as both clients and servers, making files available for upload and download from multiple other users.

Historically, early systems like Napster popularized centralized indexing, where a central server listed available files. This approach evolved into decentralized or hybrid architectures such as the eDonkey network, Gnutella, and, most prominently, BitTorrent. BitTorrent introduced swarms, where many users simultaneously upload and download pieces of a file, improving efficiency for large transfers. Over time, a variety of clients and networks emerged, each with different features and degrees of centralization.

Technical basics include the use of torrent files or magnet links that describe a file’s metadata and piece structure. A tracker or distributed hash table (DHT) helps peers find other participants. Peers may be seeders (sharing complete copies) or leechers (downloading while uploading). Private trackers or access controls can limit participation, while public networks emphasize openness and scalability.

Legal and ethical considerations are central to discussions of fildelingsprogrammer. While they enable legitimate uses such as distributing open-source software and public-domain content, they are also associated with copyright infringement in many jurisdictions. Laws, licensing agreements, and enforcement practices vary by country, and many platforms discourage or restrict illegal sharing.

Safety and quality concerns include malware risks, fake or mislabeled files, and privacy issues. Users are advised to verify sources, use reputable clients, and maintain up-to-date security software.
