Figyelemelméletek, also known as theories of attention, explore how humans and animals select and process information from the environment. These theories attempt to explain the mechanisms by which we focus on certain stimuli while ignoring others. Early theories, such as filter theories, proposed that attention acts as a bottleneck, allowing only a limited amount of information to pass through for further processing. Broadbent's filter model, for example, suggested that unattended information is completely blocked.

Later developments introduced attenuation theories, which posited that unattended information is not completely blocked but rather weakened or attenuated. Treisman's attenuation model suggested that stimuli are processed to varying degrees of depth, and those with higher relevance or significance can break through the attentional filter.

In contrast, resource theories view attention as a limited pool of cognitive resources that can be allocated to different tasks. According to this perspective, performing multiple tasks simultaneously can lead to performance decrements if the combined demands exceed available resources. Capacity models, such as Kahneman's capacity model, describe attention as a flexible resource that can be distributed across various cognitive processes, influenced by arousal and task difficulty.

More contemporary approaches, like spotlight models and zoom-lens models, conceptualize attention as a spatial mechanism that can be directed to specific locations in the visual field, akin to a spotlight or a zoomable lens. These models emphasize the flexibility and movement of attentional focus. Finally, feature integration theory proposes that attention is crucial for binding individual features of an object into a coherent perception. Without sufficient attentional resources, features may remain unbound, leading to illusory conjunctions. These diverse theories continue to evolve, offering insights into the complex nature of attention.
