Figueres

Figueres is a city in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is the capital of the comarca of Alt Empordà and is located in the northeastern end of the Catalan region, near the Costa Brava and close to the French border. The town sits along the Muga River and has a historic centre with medieval streets and several churches and squares.

Figueres is best known as the birthplace of the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí (1904). Its most prominent landmark is the Dalí Theatre-Museum (Teatre-Museu Dalí), a major cultural venue built around the artist's life and works on the site of the former municipal theatre. The museum is one of the most visited cultural institutions in Catalonia. Nearby, the Castell de Sant Ferran, a large 18th-century fortress, is a notable historic site.

The economy of Figueres is driven by tourism, services and commerce, with the Dalí Museum drawing visitors from around the world and contributing to the regional economy. The city also serves as a regional hub for the surrounding Empordà area.

In terms of transport, Figueres is served by Figueres Vilafant railway station on the Barcelona-Paris high-speed corridor, with connections to Barcelona, Girona, and onward international routes. The nearest airports are Girona–Costa Brava Airport and Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport in France.
