Fibrinisäikeet

Fibrinisäikeet, also known as fibrin fibers, are protein strands that play a crucial role in blood clotting. When a blood vessel is injured, a complex cascade of events is triggered, leading to the formation of a clot to stop bleeding. Fibrin is a key component of this clot.

The process begins with the conversion of a soluble protein called fibrinogen into insoluble fibrin. This conversion is catalyzed by an enzyme called thrombin. Thrombin is activated as part of the clotting cascade. Once formed, fibrin monomers spontaneously aggregate and polymerize, forming a mesh-like network of long, thin fibers.

This fibrin mesh traps blood cells, such as platelets and red blood cells, effectively plugging the wound and preventing further blood loss. The fibrin fibers are strong and flexible, providing structural integrity to the forming clot. Over time, the clot can be stabilized by cross-linking of the fibrin fibers, further enhancing its strength.
