Festlandnetz

Festlandnetz is a term used in German-language discussions of infrastructure to denote the portion of a network that lies on the continental landmass, as opposed to offshore or island networks. The expression is most common in energy infrastructure discussions, and is sometimes seen in telecommunications contexts where fixed-line networks are contrasted with mobile or maritime networks.

In the energy sector, the Festlandnetz refers to the onshore transmission and distribution grid that receives power from offshore installations or connects to neighboring countries’ networks. Offshore wind farms transmit electricity via subsea cables to landfall points, where the power is then injected into the Festlandnetz and carried onward through the high-voltage transmission system to consumers and industry. This onshore grid forms the continental backbone for integrating offshore generation, interconnecting regions, and balancing supply and demand.

Operationally, the Festlandnetz is managed by a transmission system operator or national grid operator within the country. It is governed by national energy legislation, grid codes, and cross-border interconnection agreements. Planning and expansion focus on reinforcing the onshore network to accommodate growing offshore generation, improve regional interconnectivity, and maintain grid stability and voltage control.

In telecommunications, Festlandnetz is not a standard term; fixed-line networks are typically referred to as Festnetz, while “Festland” concepts are more commonly used in maritime or offshore contexts. The core idea across uses is the distinction between networks located on the mainland versus those situated offshore or at sea.
