Fenja

Fenja is a character from Norse mythology, primarily known for her role in the tale of the mill Skíðblaðnir and the magical grinding stone Sæhrímnir. She is often depicted as a jötunn, a giantess, and is the sister of Menja. Together, Fenja and Menja were enslaved by the Danish king Frode. Frode forced them to operate a magical quern-stone that ground out wealth and good fortune.

The sisters were compelled to grind continuously, day and night. Their task was to produce salt, and they ground so much that eventually the sea became salty. According to the legend, they ground out a massive amount of salt before the mill was eventually overloaded. In their anger and exhaustion, they ground out a ship and then sank the mill, creating a whirlpool in the process.

The story of Fenja and Menja highlights themes of exploitation, magic, and the consequences of unchecked greed. Their story is found in the Skáldskaparmál, part of the Prose Edda compiled by Snorri Sturluson. It serves as an origin myth for the saltiness of the sea and the creation of whirlpools. Despite their monstrous nature as jötnar, they are portrayed as powerful and ultimately vengeful figures who resist their enslavement.
