Femoralstigen

Femoralstigen is a term of Swedish origin that translates to "femoral path" or "femoral trail." It refers to the anatomical pathway taken by the femoral artery and femoral vein as they descend through the thigh. This region is clinically significant because it is a common site for vascular interventions, such as catheterization, angiography, and the placement of devices like pacemakers.

The femoral artery, a major artery of the lower limb, arises from the external iliac artery and enters the thigh by passing under the inguinal ligament. It then runs down the medial aspect of the thigh. The femoral vein, which accompanies the artery, is formed by the confluence of the popliteal vein and the great saphenous vein. Both vessels are closely related within the femoral triangle, a region bounded by the inguinal ligament superiorly, the sartorius muscle laterally, and the adductor longus muscle medially.

Due to the superficial location and large size of these vessels, the groin area is a frequent access point for surgeons and interventional cardiologists. Procedures performed in the femoralstigen can be used for diagnostic purposes, to treat blockages in arteries, or to deliver medications. However, access to the femoral vessels also carries risks, including bleeding, hematoma formation, and infection, which are important considerations in clinical practice.
