Fellkanten

Fellkanten is a term used in Nordic mountain geography to denote the upper boundary of the alpine zone on a fell. The name derives from fell, a Nordic word for mountain, and kanten, edge or border. The fellkanten represents a transition zone where vegetation becomes sparse and weathering and erosion dominate the surface conditions.

Geographically, fellkanten is not a fixed altitude; its position varies with latitude, orientation, slope, and climate. It commonly runs along ridges and upper slopes and can shift with changing snow lines. In Scandinavian ranges such as Jotunheimen, the Lyngen Alps, and the Hardangervidda, it forms a distinct ecological and geomorphological belt.

Ecology and geomorphology: The area supports specialized lichens, mosses, cushion plants, and hardy shrubs near its lower margins, but above the edge vegetation is scarce. Soils are thin; periglacial processes, frost weathering, and talus mantles are common. Snow persistence, strong winds, and low temperatures create microhabitats for alpine fauna such as rock ptarmigan and specialized invertebrates.

Human use and safety: Fellkanten attracts hikers and climbers who traverse the crest or approach basins for panoramic views. Weather can be severe and rapidly changing, and sun exposure is intense with high UV. Conservation: In many areas the fellkanten lies within protected landscapes; pressures include erosion from overuse and climate-driven shifts of the boundary.
