It ensures that an individual is who they claim to be before granting them access to resources. This is a fundamental security mechanism in information technology.

The primary goal of user authentication is to prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive data. Without proper authentication, malicious actors could gain access to systems, leading to data breaches, financial loss, and reputational damage. Authentication mechanisms typically involve collecting credentials from the user, such as a username and password, a security token, or biometric data. These credentials are then compared against a stored record of valid credentials to determine if the user is legitimate.

Several methods are employed for user authentication. The most common is something the user knows, such as a password or PIN. Another category is something the user has, like a physical key, a smart card, or a mobile device receiving a one-time code. The third category is something the user is, which refers to biometric authentication methods like fingerprint scanning, facial recognition, or iris scanning. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) combines two or more of these methods to provide a higher level of security.
