Feldspaadidel

Feldspaadidel is a mineral group that constitutes a significant portion of the Earth's crust, making up approximately 60% of terrestrial rocks. They are tectosilicate minerals, meaning their crystal structure is based on a framework of interconnected silica tetrahedra. The general chemical formula for feldspar is XYZ4O8, where X, Y, and Z represent various alkali metals (such as sodium, potassium, and calcium) and aluminum. The specific arrangement and type of cations present determine the particular feldspar mineral.

Feldspars are broadly classified into two main series: the alkali feldspars and the plagioclase feldspars. The alkali feldspar series includes minerals like orthoclase (potassium feldspar) and albite (sodium feldspar). The plagioclase feldspar series is a solid solution series ranging from albite (NaAlSi3O8) to anorthite (CaAl2Si2O8), with intermediate compositions like andesine and labradorite. They are distinguished by subtle variations in their optical properties, hardness, and cleavage angles.

These minerals are commonly found in igneous rocks such as granite and basalt, as well as in metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Their formation occurs under a wide range of temperatures and pressures. Feldspars are known for their hardness, typically ranking 6 on the Mohs scale, and their characteristic two directions of cleavage that meet at nearly right angles.
