Fargekodet

Fargekodet describes a system or object where information is conveyed primarily through colors that are assigned to categories, values, or states according to a predefined scheme. The approach is used to enable quick recognition and comparison, often at a glance, without relying on text alone.

The term fargekodet is formed from the Norwegian words farge (color) and kode (code), with the participle suffix -t to form an adjective meaning color-coded. In practice, a color-kodet system relies on a consistent palette and legend so users can interpret colors correctly across materials or interfaces.

Common applications include maps and geographic data, where colors indicate variables like density or risk; data visualizations and dashboards that use color scales to show trends or categories; medical triage or patient monitoring where colors signal priority or status; safety labeling and hazard communication using standardized color codes; and electrical or engineering contexts where wires, pipes, or components are marked with color sequences for identification.

Advantages of fargekodet systems include rapid information processing, reduced cognitive load, and the ability to compare multiple items at a glance. Limitations include dependence on color perception (color blindness can obscure meanings), cultural or domain-specific variations in color meaning, and potential issues with printing or color reproduction.
