Faery

Faery, also known as fairy, fey, or wee folk, is a term used in folklore and mythology to describe a class of supernatural beings, often depicted as small, winged humanoids with magical abilities. Belief in faeries has a long history, appearing in the mythology and literature of various cultures, particularly in Celtic traditions.

Descriptions of faeries vary widely. While often portrayed as beautiful and benevolent, they can also be mischievous, capricious, or even malevolent. Their nature is frequently tied to the natural world, with their dwellings believed to be in forests, hills, mounds, or other secluded places. In some traditions, they are associated with specific elements or realms.

Faerie lore often includes elaborate customs and taboos surrounding interaction with these beings. It was believed that offending a faery could bring misfortune, while gaining their favor might result in blessings or magical aid. Stories frequently tell of humans being lured into the faerie realm, sometimes for a brief period that felt like years, or of faeries stealing human children and replacing them with changelings.

The concept of faery has evolved over time, influenced by literature, art, and popular culture. While once a significant part of oral traditions and folk beliefs, modern interpretations often focus on their enchanting or fantastical aspects, appearing in fairy tales, fantasy novels, and films. The term "faerie" can also broadly refer to the realm or world inhabited by these supernatural entities.
