FODMAPtyypit refers to the categorization of foods based on their fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols content. These are short-chain carbohydrates that are poorly absorbed in the small intestine. When these carbohydrates reach the large intestine, they can be fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas and drawing water into the bowel. This process can lead to digestive symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and constipation, particularly in individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
