FLOT1

FLOT1, also known as Fatty acid transport protein 1, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the FLOT1 gene. This gene is located on chromosome 17q21.3. FLOT1 is a member of the solute carrier family 27 (SLC27A), which is involved in the transport of long-chain fatty acids across cellular membranes. The protein is primarily expressed in the liver, where it plays a crucial role in the transport of fatty acids into mitochondria for beta-oxidation, a process that generates energy.

Mutations in the FLOT1 gene have been associated with a rare genetic disorder known as familial intrahepatic cholestasis type 2 (FIC2). This condition is characterized by progressive liver damage and jaundice, often leading to liver failure in childhood. The exact mechanism by which FLOT1 mutations cause FIC2 is not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to impaired fatty acid transport and metabolism within the liver cells.
