FIDO2 is an open standard for passwordless authentication and secure user credentials developed by the FIDO Alliance. It combines the U2F (Universal 2nd Factor) and the Web Authentication (WebAuthn) protocols to provide a seamless and secure user experience.

WebAuthn is a specification developed by the W3C that provides APIs for websites to request and store biometric and cryptographic authentication data to facilitate secure online authentication. It enables users to authenticate to websites and applications using a wide range of authenticators, including connected hardware devices (such as authenticator tokens), fingerprint readers, and retina scanners.

FIDO2 integrates the security benefits of U2F with the ease of use and accessibility of WebAuthn. FIDO2 utilizes public-key cryptography and secure biometric authentication, eliminating the need for passwords. When a user attempts to authenticate to a FIDO2-enabled website or application, the authenticator generates a cryptographic key pair, with the private key remaining on the authenticator and the public key sent to the server for verification.

FIDO2 supports a variety of authenticators, including consumer biometric authentication platforms such as fingerprint, facial recognition, and voice-based systems. It also supports hardware tokens and other security devices that provide enhanced security. In 2019, the W3C and FIDO Alliance agreed to merge their respective specifications, effectively creating the new FIDO2 standard.

The goal of FIDO2 is to provide a more secure and user-friendly experience for online authentication, while also reducing the complexity of identity verification. Its adoption has been growing rapidly in recent years, with major organizations and companies incorporating FIDO2 into their authentication systems.
