FHDR

FHDR is an acronym that can refer to multiple concepts in imaging, video, and data formats. Because it is not tied to a single standard, its meaning depends on the context in which it appears.

In digital imaging and video, FHDR most often stands for Full High Dynamic Range. In this usage, FHDR describes content that preserves the full dynamic range of a scene beyond conventional dynamic ranges. Such content typically requires higher bit depths per color channel (often 12 to 16 bits), an extended color gamut, and metadata that describes mastering display characteristics, color primaries, transfer functions, and tone-mapping decisions. FHDR content is generally intended to be mastered for a high-end display and may be tone-mapped for other displays using a defined pipeline or display-referred workflows.

In other technical contexts, FHDR is used to mean Frame Header Data or similar terms denoting a header portion of a data frame, containing timing, type, and encoding parameters. This usage is common in some container formats, streaming protocols, or codec implementations, but is not universal.

Because FHDR is ambiguous, practitioners should rely on the surrounding documentation to determine which meaning applies. When in doubt, clarify whether FHDR refers to a color and metadata regime for HDR content (the Full HDR sense) or to a header data structure within a frame.
