FGFsBMPs

FGFs (Fibroblast Growth Factors) and BMPs (Bone Morphogenetic Proteins) are two classes of signaling molecules that play crucial roles in various developmental and physiological processes in animals, including humans.

The FGF family consists of 23 structurally related proteins, which are divided into several subgroups based on their sequence similarities and functional characteristics. FGFs are involved in various processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration, and are essential for the development and maintenance of tissues and organs, including the nervous system, limbs, and skin. They exert their effects by binding to specific receptors, which activate downstream signaling pathways that regulate gene expression and cell behavior.

The BMP family, on the other hand, consists of 14 proteins that are involved in the regulation of various cellular processes, including cell fate determination, cell differentiation, and organogenesis. BMPs play key roles in the development of bones, cartilage, and other connective tissues, and are also involved in the regulation of immune responses, inflammation, and tissue repair. FGFs and BMPs have been implicated in several human diseases, including cancer, inherited disorders, and degenerative diseases. Abnormalities in FGF and BMP signaling have been associated with various types of cancers, as well as conditions such as achondroplasia and other skeletal disorders. Furthermore, FGF and BMP signaling have been implicated in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
