Fødselshyppigheten, also known as the birth rate, refers to the number of live births per thousand people in a given population over a specific period, usually one year. It is a crucial demographic indicator used to understand population growth, age structure, and societal trends.

Globally, birth rates vary significantly. Developed countries typically have lower birth rates compared to developing nations. This difference is often attributed to factors such as increased access to education and contraception, urbanization, higher costs of raising children, and changing societal norms regarding family size.

Factors influencing birth rates include economic conditions, cultural practices, religious beliefs, government policies (such as family planning programs or incentives), and the availability of healthcare. A declining birth rate can lead to an aging population, potentially straining social security systems and impacting the workforce. Conversely, a high birth rate can contribute to rapid population growth, posing challenges related to resource allocation and infrastructure development.

The total fertility rate (TFR) is closely related to birth rates and represents the average number of children a woman would have in her lifetime. A TFR of around 2.1 is generally considered the replacement level, meaning the population would remain stable if sustained.
