In functional and reactive programming, data flows are defined by expressions that automatically recompute when inputs change. Some languages and frameworks advertise expression-based features, such as expression-bodied members or expression templates, to promote a concise, declarative style.

Advantages of expressionbased approaches often include more concise code, easier reasoning about results, and potential for dynamic reconfiguration without altering control flow. Drawbacks can include reduced readability for complex expressions, debugging difficulties, and potential performance overhead from heavy expression evaluation.

History and reception of the term are mixed, as it is not tied to a single formal standard. It is used variably across disciplines and tends to describe declarative or rule-based tendencies rather than a unified programming paradigm.
