Exponeringstidsgränser, also known as exposure limits, are guidelines established to protect individuals from the harmful effects of hazardous substances or conditions. These limits are typically set by regulatory bodies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in the United States or the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Europe. The primary goal of exposure limits is to ensure that workers and the general public are not exposed to levels of hazards that could cause adverse health effects, including cancer, reproductive harm, or other serious illnesses.

Exposure limits are often expressed in terms of time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations, which represent the average concentration of a substance to which a worker is exposed over an 8-hour workday and a 40-hour workweek. For example, an 8-hour TWA limit of 5 parts per million (ppm) for a substance means that the average concentration of that substance in the air should not exceed 5 ppm over the course of an 8-hour workday.

In addition to TWA limits, short-term exposure limits (STELs) are also established to protect workers from potential health risks associated with brief, high-level exposures. STELs specify the maximum concentration of a substance that a worker can be exposed to for a short period, typically 15 minutes, without experiencing adverse health effects.

Exposure limits are regularly reviewed and updated based on the latest scientific research and technological advancements. This ensures that they remain relevant and effective in protecting individuals from emerging hazards.
