Eventwhether

Eventwhether is a theoretical term sometimes used in discussions of probability, logic, and decision theory to denote the boolean inquiry of whether a given event occurs. In this sense, it refers to the yes/no question about an event’s occurrence and is closely related to the idea of an indicator of an event.

Formally, for an event E in a probability space (Ω, F, P), the eventwhether of E can be modeled as a random variable W_E defined by W_E(ω) = 1 if ω ∈ E, and W_E(ω) = 0 otherwise. In this standard formulation, W_E is the indicator function of E. Some writers extend the term to discuss more general “whether” questions that condition on information, leading to conditional eventwhether variables W_E|G, where G is an information set.

Applications of the concept include forecasting, risk assessment, and decision theory, where the focus is on the value of questions of the form “whether E will occur.” In such contexts, the eventwhether variable is used to express expectations, variances, and other moments of the likelihood of E, or to compare alternative events under uncertainty.

Critics note that eventwhether is not a widely standardized term and may overlap with existing concepts such as indicator functions and boolean-valued random variables. As a result, some researchers prefer the precise terminology of indicators or Bernoulli random variables to avoid ambiguity.
