Evaluativ is a linguistic term used to describe language that carries an evaluative meaning—expressing a speaker’s attitude, value judgment, or emotional stance toward a referent. The category encompasses words and phrases that signal approval, disapproval, admiration, contempt, or other subjective assessments. While the English adjective evaluative is common in scholarly work, in some languages the corresponding term appears as evaluativ.

Evaluativ language differs from purely descriptive or factual statements because it encodes stance. It can be positive, negative, or neutral but always signals a speaker’s evaluative orientation. The strength of evaluation can vary, from mild hedges to strong intensification, and can be conveyed through lexical choice, tonal cues, intensifiers, or specific syntactic constructions.

Linguistic realization of evaluativ meaning varies across languages. Some languages employ explicit evaluative affixes or suffixes, others rely on a rich lexicon of evaluative adjectives and adverbs, and still others use pragmatics and context to convey attitude.
