Eusko

Eusko refers to the Basque people and their culture, or sometimes to the Basque Country itself. The Basque Country, known as Euskal Herria in the Basque language, is a region spanning parts of north-central Spain and southwestern France. The Basque language, Euskara, is a language isolate, meaning it is not known to be related to any other living language. This unique linguistic heritage is a cornerstone of Basque identity.

The Basque people have a long and distinct history, characterized by a strong sense of cultural and political identity. They have historically maintained a degree of autonomy in various forms throughout the centuries, often negotiating their rights with surrounding kingdoms and states. This historical resilience has contributed to the preservation of their traditions, including their unique gastronomy, folk music, and sports like jai alai.

In modern times, the Basque Country is divided between Spain and France. The Spanish part comprises three autonomous communities: the Basque Autonomous Community (comprising the provinces of Álava, Biscay, and Gipuzkoa), Navarre, and a small part of Burgos. The French part, known as the Northern Basque Country, is part of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department. Eusko continues to be a term used by many Basques to express their collective identity and a connection to their homeland and cultural heritage.
