Eurokoodin

Eurokoodin is the Finnish term for the Eurocodes, a family of European standards for the design of buildings and civil engineering works. Published by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the Eurocodes aim to harmonize structural design across Europe and facilitate cross-border trade and construction within the EU and other participating states. They replace or supersede many national codes, though each country issues a National Annex to tailor the general rules to local conditions and regulations.

The Eurocodes cover general design principles (basis of design and actions), and design provisions for different structural materials and systems, including concrete, steel, timber, masonry, composites, geotechnical aspects and earthquake resistance. The package is organized into several EN standards, such as EN 1990 (Basis of structural design) and EN 1991 (Actions on structures), with dedicated parts for concrete (EN 1992), steel (EN 1993), composite structures (EN 1994), timber (EN 1995), masonry (EN 1996), geotechnical design (EN 1997), earthquake resistance (EN 1998), and aluminium structures (EN 1999).

National adoption progressed differently in each country; in Finland, as in other member states, engineers use Eurokoodin in design practice, with the National Annex providing defined parameters. The Eurocodes are widely used for both public and private sector projects and are considered the common reference standard for structural design in Europe.
