Euroklassene

Euroklassene is a term that refers to the European classification system for the fire behavior of building materials. This system, also known as EN 13501-1, provides a standardized way to assess and classify how materials react to fire. The classification is based on a series of tests that measure aspects such as ignitability, flame spread, heat release, and smoke production.

The Euroclass system uses a primary classification from A1 to F, where A1 represents the highest level of performance (non-combustible) and F represents the lowest (highly combustible). In addition to the primary classification, secondary classifications can be added for smoke production (s1, s2, s3) and flaming droplets/particles (d0, d1, d2). For example, a material classified as B-s2, d0 exhibits good fire performance, moderate smoke production, and no flaming droplets.

This standardized approach allows for consistent comparison of fire safety performance across different European countries, eliminating the need for multiple national testing and classification systems. Manufacturers use Euroclassifications to demonstrate the fire safety of their products, and specifiers and regulators rely on these classifications for building design and safety regulations. The system aims to improve fire safety in buildings by ensuring that materials used are appropriate for their intended application and contribute to limiting the spread of fire and smoke.
