The process involves exposing the items to EO gas under controlled conditions of temperature, humidity, and exposure time.

Following the sterilization cycle, a crucial step known as aeration is performed. Aeration is designed to remove the ethylene oxide and its byproducts, such as ethylene chlorohydrin (ECH) and ethylene glycol (EG), from the sterilized materials. This is typically achieved by circulating air through the sterilized items. Despite aeration, trace amounts of EO or its byproducts may still be present.

The presence of ethylene oxide residue is a concern because EO is classified as a toxic, flammable, and carcinogenic substance. Regulations and guidelines, such as those from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), specify maximum allowable limits for EO residues on medical devices to ensure patient safety. These limits are based on toxicological data and aim to minimize any potential health risks associated with exposure to residual EO.

Manufacturers are responsible for validating their sterilization processes, including aeration, to demonstrate that EO residues are reduced to acceptable levels. This validation typically involves testing the sterilized products for EO residue content. Analytical methods like gas chromatography are commonly employed for residue testing. Monitoring and controlling EO levels are essential aspects of quality control in the sterilization of medical products.
